Siskiyou Arts Bus Project Update:

New sessions of Children's Movement and Music classes are ongoing. I visited one consisting of all boys 3-5 yrs. We built a house with chair backs, pillows and a blanket, all in rhythm to music. We played with capes of various colors and configurations. Superman ain't got nuttin' on these boyz. And boy, did we run!

I'm looking forward to visiting the "girls" sections-- totally different energy. The classes naturally divided into gender specific classes primarily because of age-- the children are grouped by age. So the gender separation is in part nature's doing!

In talking with the class instructor "Teacher Carl," girls dress up in dance outfits, and get into it differently-- they have a softer energy. Feels like a sigh, after my experience running around with the little guys.

I'm considering applying myself to teaching a section-- gotta say, from where I stand, feels a bit intimidating. Classroom observation can feel overwhelming. Try it with 7th & 8th graders (of any gender)-- I have... and can fully report back: "Intense." Young boy energy is not only intense but demands to be wild-- it wants to run free, move, construct and destruct. As a leader I think the best bet is move with that flow, acknowledge it, dance with it, and guide it to a more focused experience. From there we all learn.

Trust is something earned with children-- including trust of understanding.

Gotta Git, ~Lisa

Aboriginal Dance

WHAT IS ABORIGINAL DANCE?
Aboriginal Dance, as it relates to the modality of dance experience that this website represents, is not about traditional native movement passed on from generation to generation, though it can be. It's not about geographical roots nor is it a teaching of the dances of a tribe of people. Aboriginal Dance is about exploring the landscapes of body, emotion, mind and soul-- everything that is YOU-- and discovering native movements that those territories evoke. It is about your expression of who you are today; it is about dancer communicating life to life.

As a movement facilitator, it is my job and my joy to assist the dancer within to emerge and to express-- to come out and play-- by creating environments and ways of being that facilitate movement exploration on multiple levels. In the dance there are two basic awarenesses: That of tapping into an awareness of what is happening within, in our homeland of breath and heartbeat, and simultaneously being aware of our relationship with the external environment around us, whether on the dance floor or in our daily-life dance. Dance then becomes a path to increased awareness of self and other.
